State of Matter: Tales of burning

Vergine Gulbenkian

This is a story about burning inflamed by a 17th century love-epic told by Armenian and Turkish bards, held by an Armenian wonder tale and fed by family myths.

The stories begin with a dirty fire as part of the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Turkey in the early 20th century. The wonder tale and the love-epic that are woven through the piece explore the nature of fire to destroy, purify and transform. For what is the true state of matter?

This is a story true to the art of storytelling once told to Vergine as a child.

It was beautiful – so connected, superbly crafted and delivered with effortless simplicity. You allow us to really dwell in the moment, to linger in the narrative and images of the story – I think this is a rare and lovely quality.
